This Week

When Angela’s mummy and daddy were expecting a baby, they said it would  be a wonderful Christmas present and asked if she’d prefer a baby brother or a baby sister. She thought, then said “er… neither, really; but might mummy be able to manage a pony?”

Well, I suspect we’ve all been disappointed by our Christmas presents at some time.

Including the first Christmas, in Bethlehem: God gave the world an amazing gift, and some were still disappointed.  They were hoping for a warrior-king, or a political mastermind: they got a helpless child, born in poverty. He didn’t raise an army, expell the Romans, or make everybody rich; instead he talked about justice, love and forgiveness.  Many people gave up on him – way too meek!

But sometimes the gift we thought we wanted isn’t what we really needed.  I’m sure when Angela’s little brother – or sister – came along, she realised they were even better than a pony … eventually.

The Romans are long gone, along with countless other empires, cultures and civilisations. And all of them put together have not given the world one tenth as much joy as that one Christmas baby. Join us, Sunday, 7th December, at 10:30am.  St Andrews church, High St, Auchterarder, PH3 1BN; or via Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7209731710.
